ISLAMABAD, May 7, 2025In response to recent Indian missile strikes on Pakistani territory, Pakistan has closed its airspace for 48 hours, leading to the suspension of all domestic and international flights. The strikes, part of India’s “Operation Sindoor,” targeted locations in Bahawalpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad, resulting in civilian casualties.

The Civil Aviation Authority issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) announcing the airspace closure, effective immediately. Major airports, including Islamabad International Airport and Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport, have halted operations, affecting over 25 flights to destinations such as Qatar, Dubai, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Riyadh.

Military Response and Civilian Impact

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, condemned the Indian strikes as “cowardly” and confirmed that Pakistan’s military response is underway.

“Pakistan will respond at a time and place of its choosing,” said Lt Gen Chaudhry. “This heinous provocation will not go unanswered.”

According to Pakistani officials, the missile attacks resulted in the deaths of at least three civilians, including a child, and injured 12 others. Mosques in Kotli and Bahawalpur were among the structures hit.

International Reactions

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed concern over the escalating tensions, stating:

“It’s a shame we just heard about it… I just hope it ends very quickly.”

The United Nations has called for restraint from both nations to prevent further escalation.

Airspace Closure Implications

The airspace closure has significant implications for international air travel. Flights that typically transit through Pakistani airspace are being rerouted, leading to longer flight times and increased operational costs for airlines. The closure is expected to remain in effect until May 25, 2025, pending further assessments.

Background

The missile strikes by India are in retaliation for a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, which killed 26 civilians. India attributes the attack to Pakistan-based militants, a claim Pakistan denies.  Pakistan reportedly shot down two Indian jets in response to the missile strikes.

The situation remains volatile, with international leaders urging both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and engage in diplomatic dialogue to de-escalate tensions. Travellers are advised to stay informed about flight schedules and airspace restrictions.
